Wow, this looks really interesting. I'm new to both Salt and Nagios and have created a small setup at my home for testing. How do you get the data into Nagios?

Have you looked into Sensu? It's sort of similar - it's similar to nagios but uses RabbitMQ for communication. Not quite as nice as ZeroMQ IMO, but sensu itself does work quite nicely in my experience.
