I wasn't a winner, I didn't even participate in the competition. And I didn't want to send my comments to the comments section of that thread ... but I went to look at Pixa ... and decided to buy it. ... which was kind of why you arranged this competition to begin with, you bastards. But in anyway,
Before:
I had all of my photos in iPhoto. Which meant: I had the photos only on my local drive, and the backup USB drive. I was kind of burning for a solution for this problem, I had just made another todo-item in my todo-system to look for web backup solutions. I have a large paid space on Dropbox, but moving the iPhoto library to Dropbox didn't work very well, because it was constantly uploading the information iPhoto seemed to constantly change, even when I wasn't doing anything. Also, there wasn't even an easy way to actually browse your photo library on other devices, such as iOS.
Also, it was damn slow to start up. It was also damn slow to use.
Also, when traveling, I couldn't upload my photos to a secure place in the net.
Now:
I use Pixa and Dropbox for my photos. When on my iMac, I can browse the photos with great speed, I can create projects for my trips or other ways I want to organise the photos. I can also see all my photos on any of my devices, such as with iOS Dropbox app. All of my photos get backed up and synced to Dropbox, and there's also a nice way to browse them when on iMac.
What I did was that I started to use the Photo Upload of Dropbox. If I connect my iPhone or iPad to my iMac, it'll sync the photos to "~/Dropbox/Camera Uploads". Also, if I'm travelling, I can open the iOS Dropbox app and it'll upload all new photos to this folder. On my iMac, I created a Hazel rule to move the files in this folder to my "~/Dropbox/Photos" folder. I also set this folder on Pixa as a Live Folder. This way all the photos I take with my iOS devices will end up in Pixa.
There are further modifications to this process that I made, but I don't want to confuse you with the basic process.
Also, I'm not a serious photographer. I have something like 5000 photos and I usually don't modify these photos at all. But if you want to modify a photo in a way that Pixa doesn't support, perhaps you can just open it in another program and modify it there?
