Übersicht has the makeBgSlice method that will let widgets check the background below it, and it will be refreshed on wallpaper change (if this works with spaces I do not know). I wonder if this could be used by widgets to change themselves to be the right colour.

Oh man, I missed that. Because it's usually called in afterRender, which I don't think is called after a Space switch, it would probably have to be polled for changes, which would get CPU expensive. I'll definitely play with it, though. Thanks!
There are JS libraries that can return average colors for a Canvas image element. They could be rounded off to add classes to each widget, which would mean no clicking and every widget could fit its section of the desktop. holy crap.
