This was actually not intentional, and wasn't realized until after the initial release. I'm hoping that after exploration I'll be able to find a backwards-compatible way to accomplish what the new APIs are doing that Mavericks can't. It's a matter of a lone developer trying to support too many OSs, though, and the cost/benefit ratio will have to be considered.
