When a search is done and nothing is found, nothing is shown, making one wonder if it is still searching or nothing was found.

I'm using High Sierra and Safari and I can't see the search field unless I mouse over it. In dark mode I can see a little bit of the right side of the box, but not the spyglass icon.

I don't have a High Sierra install to test on, but it works fine on Safari in Mojave and I can't imagine the Safari versions would make that much difference. You might try clearing cache and refreshing, and let me know if that solves it for you.
