This is something I've been trying to come to terms with lately - how "increasing population / access to information" produces more and more (on an absolute scale) outliers of various kinds. It's sort of like a U-shaped curve, starting with 'there are many people famous to millions and I've have no reason to think about them or their fans' to 'wow, there are many people with 1 mil fans' and then it centralizes to you knowing about the ones with 100 mil'. (I'm not sure how much sense the previous sentence made but nvm)
